Abstract: The estimation of vertical profile of temperature and moisture in the atmosphere from satellite data is a key issue in meteorology, since it provides an important input for numerical weather prediction codes. This is a fundamental procedure in the Southern Hemisphere, where there are large areas uncovered by data collecting ground stations. In this paper the atmospheric temperature profile is retrieved from remote sensing data using a new regularization operator, it is based on a non-extensive form of the entropy. The Tsallis' thermostatistic [1] is employed to derive the non-extensive formulation for the entropy. The regularization technique is a generalization of the maximum entropy principle. The regularization parameter can be found by the Morozov's discrepancy principle and/or by the modified Hansen's criterium [2]. The inverse problem is formulated as in our previous works [3, 4].
