Abstract: In this work we present a comparison of the particle distribution functions generated by codes that codify selected methods for the solution of the transport equation in radiative transfer. The selected methods are the $P_N$ method, the analytical discrete-ordinates method, the $LTS_N$ method and the invariant imbedding method. The aim of this work is to select among the studied methods the one that is the most accurate and most efficient, in order to be used in future works in radiative transfer inverse problems. From the performed analysis, we found that the $P_N$ and the analytical discrete-ordinates methods are the most accurate methods and that the analytical discrete-ordinates method is the most efficient one.
