Abstract: The Center of the Weather Prediction and Climate Studies (CPTEC) is installing a data assimilation data system, the Physical-space Statistical Analysis System (PSAS) that will produce objective analysis to the Global Circulation Model (GCM) CPTEC/COLA. This assimilation system is based on estimation theory, implying in a high computational cost in its current version. The software was developed for computers with scalar processors, employing optimizers for cache memmory access. In order to become PSAS operational for CPTEC, the PSAS was paralellized using OpenMP standard for the NEC-SX4, a vectorial computer with shared memmory with 8 processors. Details of the algorithm and the paralellization with OpenMP for using to NEC-SX4 are explained, as well as the results in terms of speed-up/efficiency are shown. Future works are also discussed.
